"Don't Give Up on Lot"

[The Wickedness of Sodom And The Demise of Lot]

Gen 19:1-11

1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the
evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of
Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet
them, and he bowed himself with his face
toward the ground.
2 And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn
in to your servant’s house and spend the night,
and wash your feet; then you may rise early and
go on your way.”
And they said, “No, but we will spend the
night in the open square.”
3 But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to
him and entered his house. Then he made them a
feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
4 Now before they lay down, the men of the
city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all
the people from every quarter, surrounded the
house.
5 And they called to Lot and said to him,
“Where are the men who came to you tonight?
Bring them out to us that we may know them
carnally.”
6 So Lot went out to them through the
doorway, shut the door behind him,
7 and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so
wickedly!
8 See now, I have two daughters who have not
known a man; please, let me bring them out to
you, and you may do to them as you wish; only
do nothing to these men, since this is the reason
they have come under the shadow of my roof.”
9 And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said,
“This one came in to stay here, and he keeps
acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with
you than with them.” So they pressed hard
against the man Lot, and came near to break
down the door.
10 But the men reached out their hands and
pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the
door.
11 And they struck the men who were at the
doorway of the house with blindness, both small
and great, so that they became weary trying to
find the door.
Introduction:
What God said about Sodom in Genesis 18 was
true. The people of this city were corrupt and
evil to the core.
There was no way God could any longer look
the other way on their wickedness.
When God sent the Angels to visit this place it
was time to destroy it. They (The Angels) were
to look for ‘ten righteous people’in the City.
Abraham in an attempt to save his Nephew Lot
had asked God to spare the city if He could find
some people there who were righteous.
There are three warnings and three lessons
within this lesson today, they are as follows;
• There is a danger in flirting with sin.
• There are consequences for dwelling
among the wicked.
• There is an internal spiritual-conflict
when the believer practices Sin.
For the sake of our exegetical journey I want to
identify 3 landmarks of interest for our learning.
I. Lot’s position in Sodom (Vs 1-3)
Now the two angels came to Sodom in the
evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of
Sodom.
When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and
he bowed himself with his face toward the
ground.
Note
When we arrive at this text we see the city of
Sodom settling down for the evening.
Business is closing, and the movers and shakers
of the community are about to leave their post
for the day.
When two un-expecting men arrive into town.
This picture arrest us because Abrahams nephew
Lot is among the elders of Sodom. He has
position and power in the city.
• Lot had been in Sodom so long that He
begun to establish himself as a business man
in the city.
• When he is sitting in the gate with the elders
and rulers of the city he is doing business
and holding office among them.
• The gate was generally an arched entrance
with deep recesses and seats on either side.
It was a place of meeting in the ancient
towns of the East, where the people
assembled either for social interaction,
judgment or to transact public business.
Either way, from this picture of involvement
Lot was a resident of Sodom and had made
himself at home.
Note
• Every visitor that came to this wicked place
had to come through the gate at Sodom.
• The men and elders of the city had the first
opportunity to offer them something and or
to pass judgment on them.
This was the place of transactions, a place of
deal making, a place of inspection and mischief
for Sodom.
Observation
• When Lot sees these angels he bows in the
traditional Middle Eastern culture, as a
greeting. He does not know that they are
Angels, but he must assume that they are
men of honor and of prominence.
• Perhaps he thinks they are business men or
people who are an opportunity for him to
invest with or to invest in.
• The bible says that He invites them to his
house to entertain them. This was also a
form of business, and an opportunity to
engage in trade and commerce.
Application:
• For the sake of our text, Lot represents
the child of God who is dwelling in Sin.
• He is the picture of how comfortable a
believer can get when they are living in
rebellion against God.
• Lot knows of Jehovah, but has chosen to
live among the ungodly people of Sodom.
• He has become comfortable, with the
lifestyle, at ease with the culture,
submerged in the darkness and at total
comfort with all that is wrong…
• Sin in the life of the carnal believer can
become a place where you no longer
really are affected by the effects of
wickedness.
• He is a man of business and his job keeps
him occupied in Sodom instead of his
convictions demanding that he leave.
• Sin will make you stay longer in a place
than you want to stay, and make you pay
more than you want to pay.
Part B
2 And he said, "Here now, my lords, please turn
in to your servant's house and spend the night,
and wash your feet; then you may rise early and
go on your way."
And they said,"No, but we will spend the night
in the open square."
3 But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to
him and entered his house. Then he made them a
feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
Note
Here we see that Lot is an aggressive man. He
has resources, he has persuasion, he has the
ability to maneuver in the market place…
He has something to offer the men, and so he
does without even wavering…
Being a man of business and wanting to impress
the guest He extended hospitality to them trying
to win them over for his own business.
Observation
Lot did know that they were Angels… and he
was not trying to protect them from the residents
of Sodom.
This was a business matter for Lot. (Gen
13:5-12, reveals lot’s wealth)
The Angels know who Lot is but Lot does not
know who they are.
They know he is Abraham’s nephew they have
come for him.
After they first decline to stay with him, He is
persistent to have them in his home.
They finally agree to stay with Him.
Application:
I notice that God can find his children in the
midst of their sinful rebellion. When he finds
them he always has a plan to deliver and to
rescue hem, even when they themselves don't
have since enough to get out of it themselves…
• God has a way of sending help to the child
of God even while they are in rebellion
against His will in their lives.
• God sends his children visitors to change
their direction and to remind them of His
purpose and plan for their lives.
• God always has a witness somewhere
willing to come and see about the wayward
believer.
• As children of God we ought to be
concerned as the Angels were for those we
know that have gone astray.
• As children of God we ought to also be
willing to go and see about them, stay with
them and also be available to minister to
them, even if they don’t recognize who we
are.
America is just like Sodom, and there are some
“Lot’s” in this generation that need rescuing!
II. Lot’s problem in Sodom (Vs 4-9)
4 Now before they lay down, the men of the
city, the men of Sodom, both old and young,
all the people from every quarter, surrounded the
house.
5 And they called to Lot and said to him,
"Where are the men who came to you tonight?
Bring them out to us that we may know them
carnally.”
Note
When we come to this text we discover that
the word has gotten out quickly about Lot
and his new quest.
• In this verse the true behavior of the
sodomites come out. Their lust for these
men, and the desire for homosexual activity
is why God came to destroy the city.(Gen
18:20-22)
• The bible make sit clear that because of their
sinful desires, they surrounded the house in
an act of lust to violate these Angels.“The
words to get to know them” are the words
that refer to sexual intimacy.
• Their demand for Lot to bring them forward
indicates that this behavior was not new to
them or to Lot.
• It was expected that they should have an
opportunity to do this. And so the entire
city came out to either participate or to
spectate. “This was a wicked place.”
Application
We too should resonate with this behavior, for
on last week we saw the Supreme court validate
this wickedness and declare it to be done across
the nation.
They declare it constitutionally to be a good
thing for Homosexuals to be married.
The act of homosexuality is sin before God, and
it is not designed for marriage, nor does making
it constitutionally right make it morally right.
God forbids it and God will punish it!
Observation
On last week Sis Wilson and I were in San
Francisco, and notice that as a City they have
declared June as Gay pride month. At the end of
the Month they are having a city wide parade to
celebrate this abomination before God.
It reminds me of Sodom. Everybody was
involved, everybody was okay with it,
everybody understood the culture, they talked
the same language, they shared the same
ideaology, they were not alarmed that they were
doing what was natural to do.
Yet while they were doing it, the judgement of
God came down. While the judgement came
down, they knew not that His wrath was among
them!
Question
1. Will God not judge this sinful generation?
2. Will God not judge the wicked hearts men?
3. Will God not judge the acts of immorality
on a wicked nation…
4. A Nation that kills the unbor in the womb…
5. A nation that tolerates and supports
divorce…
6. A nation that celebrates sex outside of
marriage
7. A nation that parades same sex marriage,
and homosexual intercourse
If God would visit Sodom, then he has no
problem with visiting America!
• Woe unto the country that thinks God has
changed his mind about sin…
• Woe unto the country that believes his
standards have changed…
• Woe unto the country that thinks
homosexuality is about love…
• Woe unto the country that believes God
will let this sin pass…
• Woe unto the country that participates in
what God hates…
Part C
6 So Lot went out to them through the doorway,
shut the door behind him,
7 and said, "Please, my brethren, do not do so
wickedly!
Note
When we come here to this verse we see Lot
trying to work as a mediator with
unrighteousness and wickedness.
• He has been among them so long, that he
now thinks he can reason with immorality
• He thinks he talk sin down…
• He thinks he make lust behave…
• He thinks he has the ability to persuade
the wicked to change their desires…
• Lot has lost his mind…

Somebody should tell him that he has lost his
influence…
Somebody should tell him that his witness is
shot…it aint no good and he cant stand in the
gap because he has compromised his integrity,
and he has given up his right to be heard
• Lot’s problem was he had become a
resident of Sodom and was now obligated
to do what the rest of the city demanded.
• Lot’s problem was he had become affiliated
with their behavior and was in no position
to stop them from this attack.
• Because he sat in the gate of Judgment and
witnessed their wicked acts before he didn't
have a voice, because he was a silent
participant in their sins…
• Because he sat in the gate of Judgment and
witnessed their actions…they knew that he
knew he had no right to be righteous now,
and stop them from doing what they desired
to do.
• Remember Lot’s problem was Lot does not
know these Guest are Angels, he is trying to
protect his interest. So he begins to negotiate
with the wicked men of Sodom
Application:
• When the wayward child of God dwells in
wickedness to long, he or she becomes over
familiar with people of sin.
• When it comes time to do the right thing in
this environment it is so hard that they are
usually overwhelmed with rejection.
• Here, Lot becomes the minority and does
not agree with the sin that is about to take
place, but because he has been among them
so long He has no godly influence to
persuade them one way or another.
• Perhaps there is a lot amongst us today?
• Perhaps you've been sodom so long that you
think you can reason with the culture
• Perhas you think you got some influence
with the gay pride community
• Perhaps you think you can sit on the fence,
take their money, dance at their party and
then influence them not to do wrong…
• You are just like Lot, and they will turn on
you too if you try and stop them from
perverting the innocent or spreading their
poison to the those unlike them…
I stop by to tell you today, you cant reason with
the wicked…
You cant partner with the ungodly…
You cant support their agenda and believe in
Gods too.
You cant say Im a follower of God and a
supporter of gay rights and homosexual
marriage…
They wont have it , and they wont tolerate
you…Just like Lot.
You cant live among them like Lot and then try
and deny them their physical lust, and wicked
sexual desire!
Note:
These men thought their sinful desires were
perfectly okay… Just like the supreme court…
and these men thought there was nothing wrong
with their desires.
They had become so corrupt, that they were
willing to hurt Lot physically to have a chance to
rape another man.
Homosexuality is a perversion that can and
will destroy the thinking of mankind.
The act of sex becomes perverted (twisted,
wicked, evil) and because of the perversion it
will kill, destroy, and cause physical and
emotional harm.
It also knows no commitment like heterosexual
relationships. Because of it’s wickedness it
cannot be monogamous.
Part B
8 See now, I have two daughters who have not
known a man; please, let me bring them out
to you, and you may do to them as you wish;
only do nothing to these men, since this is the
reason they have come under the shadow of my
roof."
9 And they said, "Stand back!" Then they said,
"This one came in to stay here, and he keeps
acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with
you than with them." So they pressed hard
against the man Lot, and came near to break
down the door.
Note
When we gather here at this verse we see the
highest form of their wickedness… their lust has
driven them into a frenzy… they have got to
have these men for themselves…
their evil desires to harm and to sexually assault
the innocent has reached a crescendo!
observation
Lot has become such a wicked businessman he
has arranged a deal to have his daughters to be
violated instead of these men.
Lot is so carnal he would allow the Sodomites to
hurt his own flesh and blood, to keep the deal
alive in his home…
Remember he does not know these are Angels,
he thinks these are men that have come to town
to do business.
His mind is on money, his mind is on profit, his
mind is on himself, and as a result he would
offer up his family to protect his business
offerings.
Application
Living in a place like Sodom, and participating
in the Sodomite ways, will effect the way you
think about your family.
It will effect the way you value your
relationships.
It will effect the way you lead, guide and protect
as a man.
The Sodomite mindset has slipped into Lot.
He has forgotten how he was raised. He has
forgotten the way he was taught. he has
forgotten the values he once embodied.
He is trying to bargain his babies, to save his
money.
He is trying to barter his way to make the next
deal.
He is compromising with sin so he can get ahead
in life.
He is lost his way and unable to see just how far
he has fallen.
Question
Is there anybody here ever been to Sodom?
Anybody here ever lost your way? Anybody
here remember what it was like when you backslid
from the Lord?
Anybody here know that dark feeling of trying
to compromise with sin, and cant make the deal?
Lot can identify with you…He has stayed to
long in Sodom…
He has compromised his convictions, and now
his family is in danger…
III. Lot’s protection in Sodom (Vs. 10-11)
10 But the men reached out their hands and
pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut
the door.
11 And they struck the men who were at the
doorway of the house with blindness, both
small and great, so that they became weary
trying to find the door.
Note
When we come to this portion of the text we see
God intervene in the life of backslidden Lot.
He is about to get assaulted by the sin he has
embraced, but God intervened at the nick of
time.
Lot was about to give up his daughters in a
compromise with sin, But God divinely
intervenes to redeem his family
Here we see the picture of the mercy of God inspite
of Lots foolishness.
Here we see the mercy God in-spite of his back
slid-den behavior.
Here we see the mercy of God intervening and
saving him from those who would destroy
him…
Note
The Angels of God sent to deliver him, and
snatch him from harms way…
They do two things… they rescue and then they
protect…
They struck the men with blindness… who were
trying to break down Lot’s door, so that they
could not get in…
Note:
Even in their blindness the men of Sodom were
yet trying to get to Lot…
The bible says that they wearied themselves
about the door…
Thats how wicked they were, that even in their
blindness they would not relent from their evil
desires….
God has a way to protect Lot, even in his
disobedience.
This blindness was a sign that God had rescued
him…
This blindness was a sign that these Angels were
not ordinary men, they were beings sent from
Jehovah.
Through their deliverance Lot has been given a
sign that he needs to leave Sodom.
He has been given a sign that he is no longer
wanted in that City.
He has been given a sign that God has made a
way from him to escape…
Lot now has a choice to make… Jehovah has
come to the rescue.
Conclusion:
Im glad today that the Angels pulled Him into
salvation…
Im glad that they did not reason with Him…
Im glad that they did not give him a chance to
come in on his own…
Im glad that they pulled him into the House
This was the act of God…. he pulled Lot to
bring him in…
And He pulled you and I and brought us in…
All those who have ever been saved have been
pulled by the Grace of God, redeemed by the
Mercy of God and placed in the House God…
Is there anybody here glad you got pulled
today?
Is there anybody here glad today that those he
pulled he brings into the House
Is there anybody here today glad to be redeemed
by the blood of the Lamb…
Im glad he pulls humanity…
He pulls my sins and put them on his son…
He pulled my penalty and put it on his son…
He pulled my sentence and put it on his son…
His pulled my time in hell and went in my place
AND while HE was there in the grave …
He pulled the Keys of Hell, away from the devil
and rose back to life with all power of heaven
and earth in his hands…
Though America is Like sodom, He is still
pulling today!
If he would pull in Sodom then, he is pulling in
Sodom now
If he would pull a man like Lot he can pull a
person like you!
He is the same God today as He was in the days
of Sodom
He is yet judging sin, and He will Judge it
again…
Sodom will never get away…Sodom will never
escape the wrath of God…Sodom will never
bypass the consequences of immorality…
Sodom will never get a pass on sin…
The same God who Judges it then will judge it
again…
So pray with me that God pulls somebody to
into he House
• Pray that God Pull somebody into safety
• Pray that God Pull somebody from his
coming wrath
• Pray that God Pulls somebody from the
wicked culture
• Pray that God Pull somebody from a back
slide condition
And Save them by His Mercy through his
wonderful Grace
