Topic: Sunday Morning Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:1–13

The Chronicles of David
Chosen by God for the Ministry
1 Samuel 16:1-13

16 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.”
2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.”
But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Then invite Jesse to the sacri-fice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.”
4 So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”
5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and in-vited them to the sacrifice.
6 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
8 So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.”
And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon Da-vid from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

Introduction

We enter now into a study of the life of David, “the man after God’s own heart.” When we arrive here we have to look back and discern what’s gone wrong with King Saul.
Saul had a chance to be Gods man as the king of Israel, but because of his disobedi-ence and unwillingness to trust God, the kingdom has been taken from him, and God has a new man for the ministry of King of Israel.

This text is significant for us because we can learn a great deal about what it means to be called by God and what it means to serve in the role as a leader over Gods people.

For example, there is no way to really un-derstand Gods mind when he chooses who he chooses to work for him. In this text he chooses the least of men in the family.

First He chose a little nation called Israel and then he chose the little tribe of Judah, then he chose little Jesse the shepherds family, and last of all he chose the last born of all the boys.

God calls people to serve him that nobody else would've probably called.

Application

When I look at my own life I can see this same pattern. My mother was born 16th out of 17 kids. She lived in Memphis Ten-nessee. Her grandparents were descendants of slaves.
My mother was raised in the country and raised very poor, and she married young and married a poor carpenter.

When they married they had a ready-made family, two girls and 1 son. I came along as the fourth child, the oldest of my moth-er’s four sons, but the 4th born of my dad-dy's children.

I was troubled kid, incarcerated early in life, gang involved, misled and misdi-rected, but God would call me unto himself out of all of the other children.

He hand-picked me to work for him. I wasn’t the best, brightest or most qualified, but I was His choice.

Just like David, I had a call on my life.
Today’s text is about this ministry that God has called us too. I pray that as you listen today, you too can learn to see in others what God sees in them.

I pray that we can learn not to look for physical characteristics but rather spiritual ones as we select people to lead us, serve us, and do what God would have them to do for us in our lives.

Background

The Lord instructed Samuel to go to the house of Jesse in Bethlehem to anoint Isra-el’s new king.

Although frightened that he might be found out by Saul, Samuel went to Bethle-hem to offer a sacrifice.

There he was joined by the family of Jesse. Samuel looked upon Jesse’s seven older sons and was impressed by their appear-ance. But God rejected them and looked instead for one who had a faithful heart.

David, the youngest, was called to the house, and the Lord instructed Samuel to anoint him. David was empowered by the Spirit from that day forward.

I. Samuels Divine Assignment
Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have re-jected him from reigning over Israel?
Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am send-ing you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.”

2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.”
Note:
When we come to this text we see a divine question and a divine assignment asked of God and appointed by God.
1. The question is for Samuel the prophet, priest and Judge. How long will you Mourn for the man I have rejected!
2. God is saying to Samuel quit crying over the leader that I have rejected. Ac-cording to the previous chapter Samuel was the one who told Saul of the Lords actions against him, but here he has not gotten over the fact that Saul disobeyed God and refused to lead as God had di-rected him. This meant he had to go. But Samuel is struggling with the Lords decision!
Application
Sometimes in life the child of God has this same struggle. We love leaders that God has ordained, but when they fail to obey God and are being disciplined by God, we too behave like Samuel and almost can’t get on with life without them.

This can be fatal in the ministry of the be-liever! What God has said He has said! No mourning for their sin or their ministry po-sition will change what God has done and is doing in their life.
The Lord said…“I have rejected Saul!” Saul knew it, Samuel knew it and the Lord knew it!
This rejection was not yet known to the people, and Saul was still “putting on a front” as the king of the land. However the truth was that God had fired him, and his anointing as king was gone, and never go-ing to return.

Note:
Like Saul, A person may be rejected by God and still be accepted by men, but ul-timately God’s judgment will fall.
Samuel in this verse has to come to grips with what Saul has done, and what the Lord has said, and be ok with the will of the Lord in-spite of what he feels about Saul.

Observation
1. God is still removing men from fami-lies who have failed to be godly fa-thers!
2. God is still removing mothers who have failed to be godly women!
3. God is still removing pastors who have failed to obey his word!
4. God is still removing deacons who have failed to be godly servants
5. God is still removing leaders in the church, who want to do what they want instead of what God wants
Note:
• We should always remember that God don't need you to do anything!
• We should always remember that if He lets you do something for him in His name, that it is more than you will ever deserve
• Saul didn't deserve to be king, God chose him to be king. When he disobeyed, his ministry was over!
• Don't mourn too long over what God has rejected!
• If God told you to let that man go, let him go!
• If God told you let that woman go, let her go!
• If God told you let that friend go, let them go.
• Don't mourn too long over what God has rejected.
Part B.
Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am send-ing you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.”
Note
Here we discover that the second part of Samuel’s assignment was to prepare for the spiritual work of the ministry.
1. Prepare your mind to do the work of the Lord.
2. Prepare yourself for a journey for God
Samuel had to shake off his mourning, be-cause his mourning was getting the best of him.
Samuel had to get a grip on his mind and now ready himself to do only what he could do as the prophet and priest of Israel.
3. Samuel had to prepare to go and discov-er what the Lord needed him to discover. He was to go to the house of Bethlehem to the House of Jesse and look for the Lords King!
Note
• He wasn't looking for the peoples King, he was looking for the Lords King.
• He wasn't to go to the palace, he wasn't to go to all the tribes, he was to go to the least of them, in the smallest City, to the most insignificant family, and look for the one that God had already chose for himself to be king
• This was no small assignment or task
• This was no small thing this was on the heart of God, and Samuel was called to serve the Lord all the days of his life!
A new king, meant the removal of the king he just installed.
He had to obey God in this assignment, and ordain the one that God had called to serve Him, and the people of Israel.
Application
• Today God may be calling you too to change kings!
• Today he may want you to remove somebody off of the throne of your heart
• Today he may want you to put a new king on the throne
• Today he may want you to let go of the bad king, and put the one He has or-dained over every area of your life.

Part C

2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.”

Note
When we come here we see Samuel struggle with the ministry assignment from God. He is struggling because of fear. His fear is what if Saul catches me telling somebody that he is no longer the king!

His fear is that Saul will Kill him, be-cause Saul doesn't want to let go of the title or the position, that God has fired him from!

Samuel has a legitimate fear! He has a legitimate case! He has a legitimate reason to be concerned.

His life may be on the line! His welfare is at stake! His health and safety is in jeop-ardy, if the former king catches him anointing a new king, while the old one is still in his office, he could be executed for treason.

Observation

• Can I tell you that Samuel has a right to be concerned
• Can I tell you that Samuel has a right to ask questions about this assignment
• Can I tell you that you too may have to make sure sometimes that the one you've been told to stop mourning over aint out to get you because you no longer support their ministry

Note
So dangerous was Saul that Samuel had to devise a plan to escape his wrath when vis-iting Bethlehem. (See 22:17–19 for a sam-ple of Saul’s jealous rage.)
Samuel knew that Saul was crazy and ca-pable of doing some damage in his carnal mentality
Application
It’s true that when the former kings gets the word that you have helped unseat him, he just might come after you

Is true, when the former girlfriend finds out you got a new one, she just might go crazy trying to kill you and the new one

When the former husband finds out there’s a new one, he might lose it and try to hurt you and the new one

When we look at Saul in a few weeks, you are going to see the old king trying to kill the new king, and a desperate attempt to destroy all that are on his side.
• I stop by to tell you family that trouble comes with the ministry.
• You need to know today that trouble comes in every assignment
• Danger is always lurking for those who are on a mission for God. You will have to face haters and deal with the wrath of the ungodly.
II. Samuels Divine Action

2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’

3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.”

Note

When we arrive at this next portion of scripture, we see Samuel called to action according to the Lord’s command. God told him here’s what I want you to do…

I want you to take a heifer, a small cow, and tell Jesse (the people) that you have come to worship. Invite him and the family to come with you.

When you do this action, then I will give you the rest of the instruction.

Note:

Here we see a unique action for Samuel.

1. He was go down and organize a wor-ship service.
2. In the worship service he was to offer the Lord an offering of sacrifice.
3. This sacrifice is to say to the Lord thank you for what you have done for us.
4. The sacrifice is to be brought by the priest, offered by the priest, sacrificed by the priest on behalf of Jesse and the tribe he is from.
5. They don't know what God is doing, they don't know why there’s a sacrifice, they don't know that they have been chosen, they don't know that God is getting ready to select himself a king… (the oil is about to flow,) they don't know that God is fulfilling his own will for the nation, they don't know that the king has been removed, all they know is that the Samuel has come and the priest has summoned them to wor-ship…

Application

• Can I tell you today that God still moves in worship!
• Can I tell you today that the anointing of God still runs in the house during the course of worship
• Can I tell you that the Lord does his best work in the hearts of his people in worship
• Can I tell you that you never know who the Lord will touch in the worship expe-rience
• Samuel has to make his way to Jes-se’s house, if he is going to fulfill the assignment of the Lord
• Samuel has to make his way to Jesse’s house if he is going to obey the willow the Lord for his life
• Samuel has to get down to Bethlehem and worship there, if he is going to see this new king, that the Lord has chosen for himself

Application

1. If you want to see God move in your ministry, obey him in the assignment that the lord has given you to do

2. If you want to see God move in your ministry join him in the worship ser-vice, and the miracle will be yours to see

3. If you want to see God move in your ministry, trust in what he is telling you to do and follow His every command, and you will see what nobody else could see

The Lord said to Samuel do I as tell you, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.”

Observation:

• Jesse had a king in his house and didn't even know it!
• Jesse had a leader of a nation in his house and he didn't even know it
• Jesse had ruler under his roof and didn't even know it
• Sometime you can be living with great-ness, and treating them like pagans
• Sometimes God’s gift is right in front of you but can’t see it because you don't have eyes to see
• Sometimes God’s gift is so close it looks like you, but you will never see what God sees unless it has been re-vealed to you

• However, on this day a blessing was coming to the house of Jesse
• On this day a miracle from the Lord was going to rest on his house
• On this day the kingdom of Israel was going to be placed under their care
• On this day history was going to be made, and Jesse’s baby-boy was going to be exalted!

III. Samuels Divine Approach

4 So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”

5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify your-selves, and come with me to the sacri-fice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.

Note:

When we come to this portion of the text we see Samuel leading in ministry with great integrity and carefulness.

His approach is in a holy manner. When he arrives, He is met by the elders of the town, because He is Samuel, the nation’s prophet judge and priest.

• His title is well known, he installed the king, and he judged the nation for dec-ades.
• When he arrives into this little town it is a big thing to occur in little Bethlehem.
• This is not normal, this is not common, this is not to be taken lightly or for granted.
Observation:

1. He assures them that he is there for peaceful activity
2. He invites them to participate in the ministry assignment that the lord has him there for him
3. He looks for Jesse (whom the Lord told him to find) that the He may obey the will of the Lord
4. He then invites Jesse and his sons, and he consecrates them…sets them apart from the rest of the elders in the town.
5. He Prepares them for the special place in the worship service because He knows that God wants to do something special in Jesse’s house

Application
1. Samuel is teaching me in this verse how to have a sacred approach to the holy things of God!
2. Samuel is teaching me that you can’t just do what you want to do in the Lord’s ministry.
3. Samuel is teaching me that there must be order, instruction, divine authority, clarity, divine principles for what you are doing and why you are doing it!
4. Samuel is teaching me that if God did-n't order you to go, then you better not be doing it!
5. Samuel is teaching me that when you get to the place where he has sent you to go, invite others who are there to worship with you, so they can see the miracle of God.
6. Samuel is teaching me that nothing about ministry is about you, but rather about HIM and the people HE wants to minister too.
7. God wanted to minister in Bethlehem.
8. God wanted to minister in Jesse’s house.
9. God wanted to select himself a king, and Samuel was going to do the work of the Lord, so that the will of the lord would be done!

He had the right approach to the divine assignment he had received from God

IV Samuels Divine Assessment

6 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!”

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him.

For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appear-ance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

8 So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”

9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord cho-sen this one.” 10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”

Note:
Here we discover that up to this point in Samuels’s ministry assignment he had done well with what the Lord had called him to do.

However, in verse 6 he is about to make a mistake.
He is about to choose a king based on what he looks like (outer appearance) and what Samuel thinks the lord is looking for!

• It’s here that we discover that God and man don't choose the same type of minis-ters!
• It's here that we discover God’s stand-ard is not man’s standard!
• It’s here that we discover that God doesn't select a man because he is healthy, wealthy and wise…
• God doesn't choose a man because he is the first born…
• God doesn't choose a man because he is eloquent…

Samuel was about to make the mistake of evaluating the men by their physical gifts (see 10:24) when God reminded him that the heart was the important thing.

Application

• Can I tell somebody that God is looking for servants with the right heart to minis-ter to his bride
• God is looking for servants who has a heart for his people
• God is looking for people he can use, whose heart is right
• God is looking for people he can use, whose heart is for the Lord

• If you wondering why the Lord won’t use you, check your heart and see what’s inside of you
• If you're wondering why you can’t be the leader of the ministry check out your heart
• If you're wondering why the Lord pro-mote you, check your heart
• If you're wondering why the Lord won’t move in your life, it’s probably a heart issue

Conclusion:

11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.”

And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.”

12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking.

And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!”

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon Da-vid from that day forward.

Note:

A friend in my library said, brother Angu-lus don't miss what the text just said…

When Jesse didn't bring David forward for examination, the Holy Spirit did it for him-self.

To Jesse he was the baby boy just keeping the sheep, and he shouldn't even come to the worship experience and dine with them!

However, God had a plan for him, and no-body would dine at the table until the guest of honor arrived!

The text says that David was in the fields, keeping the sheep (v. 11), even though there was a sacrifice and a feast at his fa-ther’s house.

Observation

• Sometimes we overlook the ones who the Lord is dealing with, to select the ones he has not chosen!
• Sometimes we want the ones with the most training, and the ones who stand the tallest and the ones who are on the in-side, but God has called somebody else!
• Jesse couldn't see what God was doing in his child's life, while he was out in the fields with the sheep!

My friend said it is was clear that Jesse forgot about David, because he was just a boy!

It was clear that Jesse forgot about David, because his job was to keep the sheep!

It was clear that Jesse forgot about David because he was no way ready to be a king!

My friend said, that “Many a great genius lies buried in obscurity and contempt; and God often exalts those whom men despise and gives abundant honor to those who never had it.”

Observation:

1. David was keeping sheep, though it was a time of sacrifice! He wasn't in-vited to the worship experience, be-cause his daddy over looked him!

2. However, The Holy Spirit was work-ing at the table and wouldn't allow the service to end until the chosen one had been prayed over….
3. God made Samuel ask to go get David! He knew there was king in Jesse’s house and this had to be him…

Samuel said We will not sit down to meat” “till he come in from outside; for, if all the rest be rejected, this must be he.”

Note
He wasn't invited to the table, but now the table can’t be seated until the uninvited guest be seated!

Then we see something else…as a guest he came just as he was!

• As guest he came in strait from the field
• As a guest he came in un-groomed
• As a guest he came in with his shepherds clothes
• But when he came in, his countenance was unlike the others…
• When he came in he looked different
• When he came in he stood out from eve-rybody else

The bible says; Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. That is, he had a clear complexion, reddish hair in color, attractive-eyes, and a handsome face; his features were extraordinary, and there was something in his looks that was very charming.

• The text says he was good looking…the weather hadn't made him rough
• The sun hadn't hardened his skin
• The wind hadn't chapped his body
• He had a glow, and bright eyes that spar-kled with enthusiasm
• He had been with the Lord
• His innocence was on display and he was Gods King that God had called and tucked away in obscurity…

I got leave you now…

When David appeared, God told Samuel, “This is he!” He's the one! This is my son whom I am well pleased!

He was the eighth of Jesse’s boys, and eight is the number of new beginning.

When Samuel heard this he anointed him because this was his ministry from God!

His anointing with oil brought him a spe-cial unction from the Spirit of God, and from that hour he was God’s man.

It is not likely that David or his family understood the significance of the anoint-ing that day, but Samuel did!

The Lord has chosen for himself a King after his own heart!

He did it in a well-known manner! He did it in a way that he would do again in the life of another King!

• There’s something about obscurity that the Lord uses to prepare his kings
• There something about humility that the lord uses on display in his kings

• There is something about divinity that the lord uses in the life of his kings

• When He called Jesus, he did it like he did David!
• He came out of Bethlehem, a place of obscurity
• He came out of poverty, which perfect-ed his humility
• He came full of divinity which devel-oped his spirituality
He was ordained by a prophet through another anointing…
Jesus was the Son of David, the coming Messiah

• He was called to be the new king of Is-rael, as a king he would lay down his life for the sins of the world!
• As a king he would build a kingdom not of this world
• As a king he would have all his sub-jects receive eternal life
• As a king he would endure warfare to save our souls
• As a king he laid his life down that we might live
• As a king he traded a heavenly crown for a crown of thorns
• As a king he gave up his scepter for nails pierced hands
• As a king he was pierced in his side to provide blood for our atonement
• As a king he died a common criminals death, but rose again from the dead in a royal manner
• As a king it was early Sunday morning that the father raised him back to life.
• As a king he's coming back again to get his subjects
• He is the Lamb of God, king of kings and lord of lords, he's the good shepherd, he's the anointed one, he's the victor of life. He's the alpha and omega, beginning and the end, the bright and morning star...the chosen one of God!
